Huawei E5186 LTE CAT6 Router Preview

In a few weeks the German Telekom and Vodafone launch LTE-Advanced Category 6 offered speeds up to 225 Mbit/s in the downlink with Vodafone, at Telekom even up to 300 Mbit/s. At MWC, Huawei released the mobile WLAN hotspot E5786 which is already a first LTE CAT6 shown terminal at CeBIT. It was followed with another model Huawei E5186 router now. The Huawei E5186 is the successor to Huawei B593 and was not only technically upgraded, but also the design and functions are now much of higher quality.

The heart of the Huawei E5186 LTE router is new modem chipset. This is manufactured by the subsidiary HiSilicon and supports LTE-Advanced to Category 6, so depending on the network configuration, up to 300 MBit/s in downlink is possible. To this end, Carrier aggregation is used, ie different frequency ranges are combined. However, the maximum speed is only achieved when the supported bandwidth of 40 MHz is fully available.
For Germany Telekom, the frequency bands are 20 MHz LTE1800 and 20 MHz LTE2600 in cities, however, in the country you will probably encounter more often the combination of LTE1800 (20 MHz) and LTE800 (10 MHz) here and the speed with 225 Mbit/s is lower. Vodafone uses Carrier Aggregation with LTE800 (10 MHz) and LTE2600 (20 MHz), so it will also be possible here a maximum speed of 225 Mbps.



Gigabit LAN and WLAN ac
Not only the modem has been renewed at Huawei E5186, the remaining technical data have been considerably improved compared to the previous B593. The four LAN ports on the back are now working at gigabit speed, the WLAN module now supports the standards 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and thus allows wireless transmission rates of up to 1.3 gigabits/s Thus, the high speeds of LTE-Advanced can also use easily on the terminal.


The on-off switch has been moved from the side to the back side in comparison to B593, the USB interface is completely saved. A single USB port is still on the back, so printer or storage media can be integrated into the E5186 network. The two RJ-11 ports for analog phones still exist, the new functions are that not only VoIP is supported, but also VoLTE and CSFB, ie telephone directly via the SIM card in the router. The two connectors for external antennas are still available at the usual place (under the cover).

Installation and commissioning

The upper half cover of Alcatel L100V can be removed completely. Below the cover, there are the slots for SIM-card and MicroSD memory card. After any simcard was used in the standard format, the stick can be connected to the USB port of the computer. Because the USB port is not in the center but slightly to the side sitting in L100V, possibly other ports cannot be used directly next to the USB port, which I personally do not like this design so much. Exemplary contrast, the installation of the software is installed with a few clicks of the connection manager that is completely in English language.

After installation, you do not need the SIM PIN if you get the unlocked Alcatel L100V from, and then you can connect instantly to the Internet. Special settings are not necessary in most cases because the Alcatel software has already stored the needed connection profiles.

Call quality, reception and data rates

Unfortunately, there is no connector for external antennas in the Alcatel One Touch L100V LTE Stick. Even without a separate antenna, the stick provides a very good reception. In poorly served regions with LTE, the L100V still achieve decent data rates, as I have noted in the test LTE on 800 and 1800 megahertz. In the UMTS network, Alcatel L100V can achieve similarly good data rates as in the LTE network, which is due to the DC-HSPA+ technology. With around 36 megabits/s download, the L100V has surpassed my previous speed record in the telecom UMTS network.

The connection stability of Alcatel L100V has convinced me in the data rates: handover went smoothly and fluently in most cases, only rarely the LTE stick lost the power. But if use the stick on a train or in a car, the link speed of the L100V stick may be flexible depending on the network environment.

Unfortunately, the Alcatel L100V lacks the compatibility with various popular router models such as the AVM Fritz box or Dovado Tiny. This is due to the compatibility with the firmware of the routers; the routers do not recognize the drive of Alcatel USB modem. All in all, the Alcatel One Touch L100V is a very recommendable LTE Stick which comes with good software and properly fulfilled its role as a wireless modem. The low price without contract is also acceptable over small weaknesses such as the lack of connectors for external antennas or the rigid USB connection.


Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II E5786 Hands-On

The design of Speedbox LTE Mini II has changed little compared to its predecessor: on the front is still a square, monochrome display built in, which provides information clearly such as data consumption and reception quality. Also the key functions could come true via the Power and the Menu button, this feature is already known from the middle-class device Huawei E5372. Furthermore, there is again connections for external antennas, a slot for a microSD memory card and a microUSB connector. The battery is 3000 mAh strong as its predecessor and is designed to provide working time for approximately 10 hours. But the battery is built-in and could not be removable.

In addition to LTE, the LTE Cat 6 modem, of course, continue to UMTS with DC-HSPA+ and GSM/EDGE. On the other hand, of course, it must also be ensured that the velocities can be transferred from the router to the terminals anyway. Huawei has therefore installed for the first time in a MiFi router wireless ac (“Gigabit Wi-Fi”). What is the maximum speed can be achieved about it is not yet known, but one may assume that the full 300 Mbit/s is possible.

At CeBIT the German Telekom has shown only a pre-production model of Huawei E5786. The device may have some changes, for example, the color (there is also a black version of the E5786) or the logos on the front. The Speedbox LTE mini II will arrive in the summer of 2014 per the official information.


Vodafone LTE Cardstick 4G Cat4 WiFi Stick

Vodafone presents the LTE Carstick W5101 at CeBIT, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot specifically for use in the car. The device is a Stick from Huawei E8278 with Vodafone design, in addition to the usual power adapter, there is an adapter for the cigarette lighter in the car. During the CeBIT, various speed tests were carried out in the live network with the Vodafone B4000. Although some units were in the cell at the same time, above 200 Mbit/s cannot be achieved on them in the downlink consistently, even up to 50 Mbit/s uplink were recognizable on the speedometer. The latencies were compared to “normal” LTE unchanged and amounted to approximately 30 milliseconds.


VoIP and Gigabit Network
Like the previous models Vodafone B2000 and Vodafone B3000, the upgraded Vodafone B4000 has the telephone function. Thare are two RJ11 connectors for analog phones. However, the phone does not run directly on the SIM card, but is handled via VoIP. The corresponding access can be stored in the web interface of the B4000 by the VoIP provider.

Market starting from the summer of 2014
