Huawei E5186 LTE CAT6 Router Preview

In a few weeks the German Telekom and Vodafone launch LTE-Advanced Category 6 offered speeds up to 225 Mbit/s in the downlink with Vodafone, at Telekom even up to 300 Mbit/s. At MWC, Huawei released the mobile WLAN hotspot E5786 which is already a first LTE CAT6 shown terminal at CeBIT. It was followed with another model Huawei E5186 router now. The Huawei E5186 is the successor to Huawei B593 and was not only technically upgraded, but also the design and functions are now much of higher quality.

High Speed by Carrier Aggregation
The heart of the Huawei E5186 LTE router is new modem chipset. This is manufactured by the subsidiary HiSilicon and supports LTE-Advanced to Category 6, so depending on the network configuration, up to 300 MBit/s in downlink is possible. To this end, Carrier aggregation is used, ie different frequency ranges are combined. However, the maximum speed is only achieved when the supported bandwidth of 40 MHz is fully available.
For Germany Telekom, the frequency bands are 20 MHz LTE1800 and 20 MHz LTE2600 in cities, however, in the country you will probably encounter more often the combination of LTE1800 (20 MHz) and LTE800 (10 MHz) here and the speed with 225 Mbit/s is lower. Vodafone uses Carrier Aggregation with LTE800 (10 MHz) and LTE2600 (20 MHz), so it will also be possible here a maximum speed of 225 Mbps.

Gigabit LAN and WLAN ac
Not only the modem has been renewed at Huawei E5186, the remaining technical data have been considerably improved compared to the previous B593. The four LAN ports on the back are now working at gigabit speed, the WLAN module now supports the standards 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and thus allows wireless transmission rates of up to 1.3 gigabits/s Thus, the high speeds of LTE-Advanced can also use easily on the terminal.

The on-off switch has been moved from the side to the back side in comparison to B593, the USB interface is completely saved. A single USB port is still on the back, so printer or storage media can be integrated into the E5186 network. The two RJ-11 ports for analog phones still exist, the new functions are that not only VoIP is supported, but also VoLTE and CSFB, ie telephone directly via the SIM card in the router. The two connectors for external antennas are still available at the usual place (under the cover).

Huawei E5186 on Vodafone and Telekom
The Huawei E5186 LTE CAT6 router with the Huawei E5786 is record as the first Category 6 devices to Vodafone portfolio from summer. Both devices are again provided with the new name, for example, the E5186 has the new name as Vodafone B4000. Also at Germany Telekom, there are plans, the Huawei E5186 included in the assortment. Here, however, a final selection is not yet made - whether the device comes as “Speedbox III LTE”  to the portfolio is unclear.

Alcatel One Touch L100V LTE Stick Test

In this review, I’d like to introduce the Alcatel One Touch L100V LTE Stick. What Alcatel One Touch L100V can do for us and what about the specifications, and how about in comparison to competition from Huawei, learn it in this test.

Alcatel One Touch L100V

The Alcatel One Touch L100V LTE stick is currently only be purchased via the online trading site www.4g-store.com . In brief, the Telekom will take the stick under his own name LTE Speed Stick 2 in their range, we have already reported. We have sent the black L100V for the test. The LTE Stick comes in a small cardboard box without a lot of accessories; just a USB cable and a quick start guide are included. From the outside, the Alcatel One Touch L100V looks unimpressive from: it is completely made of plastic, as big as a Huawei E392 stick and has a compact USB port, which is not as good as LTE stick Huawei E398. The specifications can be seen as below:

Manufacturer: Alcatel
Model Name: One Touch L100V (tested firmware version: EX153700XX)
Technologies: LTE (4G) UMTS (3G) GSM (2G)
Frequencies: * LTE: 800/900/1800/2100/2600MHz * UMTS: 900/1800/2100* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900
Speeds: LTE: 100Mbit/s down, 50Mbit/s up UMTS: 42.2 Mbit/s down, 5.76 Mb/s up (when using DC-HSPA+)  GSM: 256kbit/s (when using EDGE)
Other: MicroSD slot

Installation and commissioning

The upper half cover of Alcatel L100V can be removed completely. Below the cover, there are the slots for SIM-card and MicroSD memory card. After any simcard was used in the standard format, the stick can be connected to the USB port of the computer. Because the USB port is not in the center but slightly to the side sitting in L100V, possibly other ports cannot be used directly next to the USB port, which I personally do not like this design so much. Exemplary contrast, the installation of the software is installed with a few clicks of the connection manager that is completely in English language.

sim Card and memory card

After installation, you do not need the SIM PIN if you get the unlocked Alcatel L100V from 4G-Store.com, and then you can connect instantly to the Internet. Special settings are not necessary in most cases because the Alcatel software has already stored the needed connection profiles.

Alcatel connection software

The Alcatel L100V connection software is convincing in every respect. Also it runs relatively fast and reacts quickly on weak systems. The design is simple and easy even for non-technical users. Despite the simplicity and experts do not come too short, there are various settings, such as the stick to adjust “LTE only”. Besides the usual configuration options, there is also a SMS Manager to send and receive short messages as well as a diagnostic tool that the exact analysis of the compound allowed. Here about the online time and the consumed volume of data to be collected.

Call quality, reception and data rates

Unfortunately, there is no connector for external antennas in the Alcatel One Touch L100V LTE Stick. Even without a separate antenna, the stick provides a very good reception. In poorly served regions with LTE, the L100V still achieve decent data rates, as I have noted in the test LTE on 800 and 1800 megahertz. In the UMTS network, Alcatel L100V can achieve similarly good data rates as in the LTE network, which is due to the DC-HSPA+ technology. With around 36 megabits/s download, the L100V has surpassed my previous speed record in the telecom UMTS network.

Speedtest-Alcatel-L100V speed

The connection stability of Alcatel L100V has convinced me in the data rates: handover went smoothly and fluently in most cases, only rarely the LTE stick lost the power. But if use the stick on a train or in a car, the link speed of the L100V stick may be flexible depending on the network environment.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, the Alcatel L100V lacks the compatibility with various popular router models such as the AVM Fritz box or Dovado Tiny. This is due to the compatibility with the firmware of the routers; the routers do not recognize the drive of Alcatel USB modem. All in all, the Alcatel One Touch L100V is a very recommendable LTE Stick which comes with good software and properly fulfilled its role as a wireless modem. The low price without contract is also acceptable over small weaknesses such as the lack of connectors for external antennas or the rigid USB connection.

Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II E5786 Hands-On

Named the Speedbox LTE mini II, the German Telekom brings a new LTE MiFi router on the market the summer of 2014. The Speedbox mini II LTE is the first LTE mobile hotspot for LTE Category 6 Up to 300 MBit/s in downlink achievable, provided appropriate tariffs and power supply. The successor of the Speedbox LTE mini is again manufactured by Huawei and Huawei E5786 MiFi are technically the original factory router. We were already able to watch the Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II accurate at CeBIT.

The world’s first LTE Cat6 modem
We have already seen many details of the Huawei E5786 LTE router at Mobile World Congress. The model is the successor to the popular Huawei E5776 ( Speedbox LTE mini ) and features the world’s first device with a modem for LTE Category 6 (LTE-Advanced) with up to 300 MBit/s. The Speedbox LTE mini II are technically the E5786, only the software and appearance will be provided with a slight branding in all likelihood, as you already know that from previous modems.

WLAN ac and strong battery
The design of Speedbox LTE Mini II has changed little compared to its predecessor: on the front is still a square, monochrome display built in, which provides information clearly such as data consumption and reception quality. Also the key functions could come true via the Power and the Menu button, this feature is already known from the middle-class device Huawei E5372. Furthermore, there is again connections for external antennas, a slot for a microSD memory card and a microUSB connector. The battery is 3000 mAh strong as its predecessor and is designed to provide working time for approximately 10 hours. But the battery is built-in and could not be removable.

In addition to LTE, the LTE Cat 6 modem, of course, continue to UMTS with DC-HSPA+ and GSM/EDGE. On the other hand, of course, it must also be ensured that the velocities can be transferred from the router to the terminals anyway. Huawei has therefore installed for the first time in a MiFi router wireless ac (“Gigabit Wi-Fi”). What is the maximum speed can be achieved about it is not yet known, but one may assume that the full 300 Mbit/s is possible.

Market launch in the summer
At CeBIT the German Telekom has shown only a pre-production model of Huawei E5786. The device may have some changes, for example, the color (there is also a black version of the E5786) or the logos on the front. The Speedbox LTE mini II will arrive in the summer of 2014 per the official information.

Vodafone LTE Cardstick 4G Cat4 WiFi Stick

Vodafone presents the LTE Carstick W5101 at CeBIT, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot specifically for use in the car. The device is a Stick from Huawei E8278 with Vodafone design, in addition to the usual power adapter, there is an adapter for the cigarette lighter in the car. In the car, Vodafone Carstick can be plugged in via USB. Vodafone provides the device for the wireless network solution in moving cars, users in a card can access internet through this Mini hotspot. For new cars, many manufacturers of LTE or UMTS hotspots now already offer this solution, which are factory installed in the car. For example, the BMW or Audi Car Hotspot.

Huawei E8278 on Vodafone Design
The Vodafone Carstick is manufactured by industry leader Huawei and there carries the model number W5101.The LTE WiFi Stick had been presented originally at the Mobile World Congress in 2013 and now it is already available for many network operators, such as in Australia or England. In Germany, Vodafone is the first provider who offers the W5101, but not the first with an LTE WLAN stick. Actually, the German Telekom has the Speed Stick LTE IV (Alcatel W800) in the range, which provides similar functionality since early 2014.

LTE Category 4 to 150 Mbit/s
Inside the Huawei E8278, there is a Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon modem. This allows Vodafone Carstick LTE Category 4 speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s downlink and 50 Mbit/s in the uplink. If no LTE network available, it can also work on GSM/EDGE and UMTS, including DC-HSPA+. The convenient USB swivel joint and the black design allow possible installation in the car. At the side of the Vodafone LTE WiFi Stick, there are two connectors for external antennas, and a MicroSD slot could also be installed. By means of a suitable memory card, you can put files like photos and videos on the card and share the files with all users of the network.

Taxi test in Berlin with NFC and QR Code
Vodafone subjects the new LTE WiFi stick in his own words from the 04/03/2014 an endurance test in some Berlin taxis. Users of these vehicles can easily connect with the Wi-Fi network using NFC tag or QR code without fumbling enter the wireless code. If you have a car and lack of the wireless terminals supporter, Vodafone Carstick W5101 or Huawei E8278 would be considerable to be a part in your cars.

Vodafone B4000 4G LTE Cat6 Wireless Router

Since Vodafone B3000 LTE Router is not yet available, the successor to B3000 is now presented to public, the model is B4000. Compared to the previous models, the Vodafone B4000 offers a number of interesting innovations. The main novelty is certainly the support for LTE-Advanced Category 6, up to 300 MBit/s in downlink will be possible on the network of Vodafone Germany. 4G-store.com had already had the opportunity to look at the Vodafone B4000 LTE router in more detail at CeBIT.

Vodafone B4000 4G LTE Wireless Router

Basic Model: Huawei E5186
The Vodafone B4000 is made by the manufacturer Huawei and the same as the model named Huawei E5186s-22 version without branding. This model can also be seen in the pictures shown, as the variant designed specifically for Vodafone at CeBIT was not yet available. But we can still see the Great changes to the original model on Vodafone B4000, the predecessor devices always reflect quite accurately the sister model without branding.

During the CeBIT, various speed tests were carried out in the live network with the Vodafone B4000. Although some units were in the cell at the same time, above 200 Mbit/s cannot be achieved on them in the downlink consistently, even up to 50 Mbit/s uplink were recognizable on the speedometer. The latencies were compared to “normal” LTE unchanged and amounted to approximately 30 milliseconds.

VoIP and Gigabit Network
Like the previous models Vodafone B2000 and Vodafone B3000, the upgraded Vodafone B4000 has the telephone function. Thare are two RJ11 connectors for analog phones. However, the phone does not run directly on the SIM card, but is handled via VoIP. The corresponding access can be stored in the web interface of the B4000 by the VoIP provider.

Vodafone-B400-VOIP Phone port

Huawei has the network components clearly modified compared to previous devices, so when the terminals that are connected to the Vodafone B4000 router, up to 300 Mbit/s downlink speed could be reached from the LTE-Advanced network. Thus, the 4 LAN ports are available on the back with Gigabit Capable and Wi-Fi 802.11ac operates on both 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz mode. On the back and on the side there is ever a USB port, storage devices or printers can be connected to the B4000 and released in the home network so easily.

Market starting from the summer of 2014
The Vodafone B4000 is expected to be available from summer in the market. They will mainly be using the Vodafone LTE tariffs as a DSL replacement, with the maximum speed of 300 Mbit/s can be achieved mainly in cities for the time being, in addition to LTE800, the same time LTE2600 must also are available. Till then, the Unlocked Vodafone B4000 and factory unbranded Huawei E5186 would be also available here on 4g-store.com .  We will keep updated about the world’s first LTE Cat6 wireless router.
